Well, New Zealand at last.

Warning(s): This post is gonna be big. No media, only good ol' text. Good thing my chair is comfy.
This post will also be self-centered. Too much is happening in my own life right now for me to care about others'.
This post is a spur of the moment thing, so there is no specific layout. I have barely convinced myself to keep
blogging (repeatedly) and i swear, if i dont get atleast 3 comments here within a couple of days then I am gonna
quit doing this.

To begin with, I have barely gotten here, reeling from a terrible board result and repeated denials from schools for admission, right till the hour before the flight. Come on, i gave three interviews in three different schools and prepared applications through the night. Tough times.

I got admission in the three where they actually cared to interview me and the rest rejected me on the basis of board percentage alone. Let's see what happens, but the school i wanted most has refused me, and i still resent that sometimes. (read: punching a wall)

Boarding the plane was surprisingly easy this time, due to the experience we(me and my parents) had gathered from the last trip, and the various upgrades IGI airport has gone through. In fact, Thailand's airport, which was a nightmare last time due to its size and language barrier (even the pilot barely speaks english :D) was a breeze this time. Won't go into details, but the food still sucked (read frozen prawns and funny smelling lentils).

We got to Auckland on June 4. Light sunlight, great weather. Another way Auckland is better than Apni Dilli, although for no fault of its own.

Since then, we have just been taking it easy and making short trips. We explored New Zealand to quite an extent last time, and ow that my brother has got his own place, its been much more cosy. (or is it cozy? correct me if i am wrong)

Now that we've spent a week here, here's exactly what Ihave done:
1. Gone playing pool and bowling in the dead of the night.
2. Bought and sold 6 cars (Let me explain. Here's what my brother does: He buys used cars on the internet and gets them all fixed up, and sells them to someone else at a profit. Its a simple, efficient business, much easier if you have good social skills)
3. Ride shotgun in a mercedes going at 247km/h.
4. Finished Cryis and Bioshock on my bro's high end computer.
5. Gotten into a feud with my parents over calling my brother "insert bad word here"
6. Ride pillion on a Kawasaki Ninja going at 216km/h. (Believe me, its nothing like you can ever imagine. You have to hold on whoever's riding for dear life, literally. Thinking of making a video. Unbelievable, believe me.)

I am currently sitting in the computer space of The University of Auckland, typing away while my brother studies in the library. Its gonna sound like i am just exaggerating it, but this is the best university i have been to. Forget IIT and its puny little sisters, once you come here, you wont like going back.

The bike is how i got here, and i am dreading sitting on it again. Lets hope i manage to hang on.

Big wave to everyone back home, if they are reading this, which is highly unlikely, because this blog has a lower visit frequency than a frozen cave in Bolivia. Probably even lower than the cave's treasure room's.

Recently watched two remarkable movies : Milk, and Yes Man.

Milk: You have probably heard of it. The story of the first openly gay elected member of an American public office, Harvey Milk.
the movie, as expected was skillfully made. What I hate about historicals is the way they cut through many parts of the protagonist's life without actually depicting the finer nuances in detail, just so they can accommodate a larger amount of information. Milk, surprisingly, doesn't do that. It shows every part of Milk's life in complete detail, which only increases its richness.

Homophobic people should stay away from this one, just as a warning.

Yes Man: This was quite a laugh. Story about a man who tries to turn his lonely, sad life around by promising himself to say 'YES' to every question he is asked. It feels like a rerun of Liar Liar and Bruce Almighty, but watchable nevertheless.

Before beginning, i'll point out that I will be writing in simple, metaphor-less, wisecrack-lacking english. Also, lots of brackets. If that irritates you, let me know. The reason for this is sheer exhaustion.

Today was supposed to be our big concert. (It wasn't a concert really, but our attempt at putting together a watchable gig)

The performance itself went rather well (video below). The vocals went okay, (except that MS's microphone went bad, but come on, in a school where an attempt is made to save money in every situation, that didn't surprise me) nobody's guitar went kaput, no drums were smashed, and no lights fell on our heads (believe me, it has happened).

After Boulevard of Broken Dreams, we moved on to the second song, We will Rock You. We chose the song mainly because its popular, and we needed crowd support.

Anyway, the song went...okay. With a couple of fumbles, and a botched solo at the end, in which our bass guitarist went crazy and intervened on our electric guitarist's part.

Result : Last place.
Everybody, including us, believed we would be making 1st or 2nd.
As it turns out, the "jury" (which consisted of hokey old conservative board members, who probably think rock music shouldn't exist) disqualified us because .................*wait for it*...........................................we said "You got mud on your face, You big disgrace". Wow, how dare we say mud, and disgrace in front of the school? Such profanity! Cover your ears, little children!!

Frankly, I am tired of this crap. Last year my house team was put down two places, because they sang "Breaking the Law", which gave the "wrong message" to such "disciplined children".

I can rant more, but whats the effing point? The result isn't gonna change, and this has only made me eager to leave JKPS.

I have uploaded the video on Tube, and although you can't see our faces (zoomed video), I am on the acoustic guitar and vocals, MS is on vocals (although you can barely hear him because his mike isn't working ; hate you Dhansingh, you asshole) Shreyas, the curly haired idiot, who covers me now and then is on bass, and Pawan is on electric guitar on the far right.

P.S. I succumbed to the pressure of studies today as well. Went ahead and gave the admission test for Brilliant Tutorials, even though I pledged to spend XIth standard developing talents. Sad day, today. Sad.

Hard Hitting Cinema

Now, I have never liked mainstream bollywood movies. Yes, its great fun with friends, but very few of them do not drip with cheese (if you are not familiar with that term, ask me). These films are realistic, with no dancing around trees or cliched dialogues. Here are 5 movies in the last 2-3 years that can actually compete with the hollywood movies in terms of quality. They are the ones that have a lasting effect on our thinking.

Johnny Gaddar - Watched it a while ago. Very impressive crime thriller.

Rang De Basanti - Well, all of us have watched this. But it still remains one of the most influential indian movies in the last 5 years.

A Wednesday - Mind blowing dialogue. Watch it for Naseerudin Shah.

Oye Lucky Lucky Oye - The story of a 'superchor'. Awesome soundtrack and cinematography.

Khosla Ka Ghosla - My personal favourite. Hilarious story of a middle class family losing their property to a shark, and then getting it back.

Access Denied

Hello. Hello?
We (me and my teammate Manmeet) participated in Access, Modern school, Barakhamba road's annual computer symposium on 16th and 17th of December. And I am SAD.

Really, really SAD. Because after working for this for more than an year, I don't have anything to show for it. We made it to the finals among 55+ teams in DPS R.K puram and came 4th. Then, we beat everyone in the prelims in Access, and then come 4th again in the finals. Not 5th or 6th, but 4th. As if God is playing some kind of game with me. Just one place away from ecstasy.

This sucks. It really does.

All nighters.

You see, I am the kind of guy who gets the job done, no matter what. And that is why, I am familiar with the Holy Grail of all nerds - The All Nighter. Its when you are up all night, just doing what you have to do : study or work. Here are some tips for people like me who cannot study in the day, and hence, study from 10pm to 8am :

1. Get some cola. Or anything with fizz. A lot of fizz. Drink it every hour to fight sleepiness. Black coffee helps as well.

2. I recommend staying in a room without a computer or a TV. They might look innocent, but in reality, they can tempt you into wasting your time. Do not succumb!

3. Whenever you feel sleepy, do one of the following:
a.Slap yourself. Very effective.
b.Punch the wall. Hard.
c.Wash your eyes. Lame.
d.Put your head in the fridge for 10 seconds. Tried and tested.

4. In winters like now, don't get in the blanket. Wear socks and sit up. Kinda obvious.

And mind you, I am not joking. This can be vital to people in board classes, like me, whose future depends on their will power. Don't give up, soldiers.

I don't want to talk about my preboards, so here goes:

See that home theatre nearby? Ask the helper guy to put in some action movie so that you can examine the "quality". Pause it just before a blast scene (or something along those lines) and Turn up the volume to max. Do this quick so that the employee won't stop you. Then press play. Shows a very satisfactory result - everybody will bend over and think they are being attacked or something.

If the computers are locked, ask the employees to log you in. Once you are in, you can change the password. If it isn't an administrator account then shut it down, press f10 when it loads, and put a password in the.

Erm. I am a little dizzy right now. Now, I have half a mind of not writing this post. '

How far will it go?
What happened today is the Indian equivalent of 9/11. But will it have the same political and emotional significance as 9/11 did in the US? No, it wont. Because, Terrorism has been recently inducted to the "Chalta Hai" list.

The Chalta Hai list already has illustrious members such as corruption, unemployment, domestic violence, and illiteracy.

As the name suggests, this list contains the things Indians, by and large, don't give a f*ck about. Of course, there will always exist the cosmetic hue and cry, but once it all settles down, we'll still be on square one.

That is because, through years and years of boasting about our culture and history, somewhere, somewhen, we lost a little something - Humanity. Humanity is what makes us open our doors to help strangers, it is what makes us stop our cars and help an injured man to a hospital, it is what makes us give up our seats to an old woman, it is what makes us trust.

Now, humanity has been replaced by its distant evil twin - Fear. It is what makes us sit at home and refuse to help, it is what convinces us to not donate blood, it is what makes us flinch on hearing "AIDS".

Now I am not telling you to open up an NGO or anything, but what everyone has to do is reply. Terrorists thrive on fear - they just need a reply. In the 1993 bombay riots, the people reopened the shops despite the threats - as a reply. Look at us, so pathetic. Most in Mumbai haven't stepped out of their homes, not even to help the injured.

I don't ask for patriotism, but spirit.

Did you see the attackers? They were kids, almost my age. The actual fiends who manipulated them into doing this are probably watching them die on TV. The kids are the ones who get shot, who will be imprisoned, probably tortured.

I won't comment on the terrorists' deed, i wont dignify them with that. I think my thoughts will echo everybody else's anyway.

What the "top secret agencies" need to target right now are the terrorist camps. They contain the most evil of them all - those who make human beings into barbarians. Thats probably the most cruel deed of all - making children kill.

I wont comment on our govt. either, because if they havent done anything about this yet, they wont do it in the future. All I can say is that our govt. looks weak. Almost all politicians i see on TV sound like they are reading their speeches from a book (which they probably do).

So. Its over. Finally.
Unlike many other parents, my parents loved this show. They set up their schedules revolving around this show. Each day, without fail, they would turn on the TV at 10 pm to get their daily fix.

Now, onto the result. Ashutosh, the incompletely educated, dhaba running, shirt removing symbol of naivety, took home 1 crore bucks (which will probably be reduced to 75 lakhs once the tax people get their way with it) and Raja, the divorced guy with a mean streak gets nothing. I was personally supporting Raja (but not voting for him, thats lame XD) but i guess "Ashu" clicked with the audience. First the Roadies thing, now this. He could live his whole life just by winning reality shows. What next, KBC?

And by the way, it appears that the "betting industry" lost 110 crore rupees over bets on Rahul Mahajan and Raja. Maybe thats a good thing , coz a bad first bet often discourages future gamblers to bet again (or is that just my theory??)

Bad Gadget decisions.

You see, 6 months ago, i got a PSP (And it wasn't easy ; my parents dont believe in allowance, so, i have to ask for everything. and getting that permission comes with loads of conditions i wont bore you with.) Now, speaking in geek terms, i am a graphics wh*re (someone who gives graphics in games a lot of importance). at first, it was utter bliss : free internet in malls, huge screen, and commendable performance in gaming.

but then, its shortcomings were revealed.

the psp-2000 has an unusually short battery life : even at the lowest screen brightness, it plays games for 3 hrs max. its built in mp3 player had the lowest possible sound output, which wasnt good even with my sennheisers. plus, it was a pain to carry something bigger than a brick everywhere. its memory cards are expensive and its difficult to find any variant above 4 gb, which sucks.

So, in the end, anyone out there who is not a casual gamer and is only going to buy one console, dont invest in the psp. i am now waiting to sell it after my 10th boards get over, along with my mobile and get something spanking new.
